desire

a desire burns deep in me to be the best female writer since Emily
to be as funny as Dave Berry
as soulful as Whitman and as thoughtful as Frost
but I worry that in the midst of this new age my talent will get lost
I don't just want to write a good rhyme
or tell a story about my time
I want to relate today to tomorrow and yesterday to last week
I want my words to be meaningful and inspire the meek
future English classes to read my writings
and picture in their minds the things I am siting
I want a book with my name on it
to sit on library shelves where greats have sit
greats like Twain, Emerson, Dickens, Tolkien and Thoreau
with patrons sitting reading them row by row
this is what I desire
to sit the future on fire
