Chrissy's adventure with The Bird

First let me introduce you to Chrissy she is our 2-year-old Rat Terrier and the light of our lives. She spends the day entertaining her imaginary friends with tea parties and little dog biscuits. She is capable of jumping about 4-feet in the air and can walk on her back two legs longer than any other dog I have ever met.

Let me begin the story of her Wednesday afternoon adventure with The Bird by saying that on Monday a bird found itself stuck in our chimney and this was a great concern to Chrissy. She could not pull herself away from the front of the fire place. As she sat there with her head tilted to one side, wondering what the heck was making that noise in the fireplace, I would giggle and say it's OK Chrissy it's just a bird. Brad and I were uncertain of how exactly to get it out and this being our 2nd run-in with birds finding their way in to some part of our house, and not having a very good experience the first time, we both secretly just hoped that the situation would resolve itself. So we closed the flue and went about our daily lives.

Then Wednesday afternoon, while the two of us were at work, The Bird found its way out of the chimney and into our home. Soot, bird crap, feathers, paw prints and the two animals were there waiting for me when I returned home for my dinner break. Knowing Chrissy as I do I picture the afternoon going something like you see on a cartoon - jumping and running about the house as things get knocked over, dog barking, bird squawking, feathers and poop flying. The Bird looking for a way out thinking "crap I finally get out of that dark, dirty hole to be chased by a creature on legs, how the heck do I get myself in to these situations anyway?" Chrissy thinking "This is the best thing to happen to me in a long time, I have a friend to play with." Then she caught it and found out they weren't friends and The Bird was not playing! Needless to say Chrissy won, the bird was injured to the point where it was hanging on to life by a very thin thread and Chrissy, feeling bad for hurting her new friend, was hiding under the coffee table thinking she was in trouble. The Bird died almost as soon as I took it outdoors and I now have to live with two birds' deaths on my conscience.
